Parenting for New Canadians

This program aims to provide New to Canada parents of children within the age range of 10 – 16 years with support for, and education about, parenting in Canada. The resources provided to participants are set up to honour their cultural background while supporting them in their roles as parents. This group revolves around approaching and overcoming challenges related to parenting while maintaining cultural values and identity in a new culture.

The six sessions will cover the following topics:

  1. Parenting styles and values: a cross-cultural comparison
  2. Talking with your youth: Encouragement, communication, and conflict
  3. Boundaries and discipline: Setting and maintaining boundaries for youth
  4. Working through family challenges: Cultural conflicts between parents and teens
  5. Understanding peer social interactions: Bullying and fitting in
  6. Supporting youth: Making positive decisions in and out of the home

Date: Returning Autumn 2017

Time:  1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
